Through a Doorway

Amelia resumed classes in Toronto. She observed the National Ballet company members closely and took the classes she noticed them frequenting. This led to her first Modern Dance class. She loved it immediately. At last, she later recalled, she’d come upon a “real” class. She initially surmised that you finally got to take it when you advanced past other classes. Awaiting a class at the Pavylchenko Studio one day, Amelia watched a Graham technique class taught by Patricia Beatty. As Beatty was leaving, she glimpsed Amelia through the doorway of a dance class, and stayed to watch her “unusual power and intensity.” As class ended, they met head on, and both spoke at once. “I want to learn what you teach! I’m starting a dance company and you should be in it!” They talked for hours.
